Multicolored Car - Ohio?
Hey!
Here's a short story I rummaged up after Little Snake sent me a prompt!
Hope you enjoy - if you do, comment and share!!
All the best,
-Little Lion
“Of course you forgot a charger,” I sigh, crossing my arms as I sit back in the driver’s seat.
He shrugs his shoulders at me, and I can feel my anger dissipating. He’d lose his keys if I didn’t make him hang them from a Command Hook next to his door until he didn’t give it a second thought.
And of course my screen is being replaced.
Danny tugs open the glove compartment, and begins to root around.
I don’t even know what’s in there - what's he looking for?
“What are you up to?”
He pauses in his search. “Can’t be that hard to get to Kentucky.”
It clicks - he’s looking for a map.
“I don’t have a map, Daniel.”
He pops the compartment shut, and points to the road ahead of us. “Gas station. There we can find a map.”
“Or a phone charger,” I mutter as I pull back on the road, and drive in the direction he pointed.
Soon enough, we come upon a gas station in a small town.
The man behind the counter fairly yells, “How can I help you today?” when we come in the door.
Looking at the few rows of food and farm tools, I can tell without hunting that we won’t find a phone charger here.
Danny glances at me before marching up to the counter and asking, “Can we buy a map, sir?”
The old man tilts his head, fixing eyes behind thick glasses on Dan.
“What, son?”
“CAN WE BUY A MAP, PLEASE?”
The old man scowls, replying, “No need to shout, son.”
He reaches under the counter, and slams a map down onto the countertop.
“Five dollars.”
“Five dollars?!” For a map?
The old man glares at me,
“Don’t make me make it ten, missy.”
Dan quickly pulls out his wallet before I breathe wrong, and the old man ups the price again.
A gruff “Good riddance” escapes behind us as the door swings shut, and Dan lays an arm across my shoulders.
“I’d better drive, Cassie. I’ll be a terrible navigator.”
“You’re also a terrible driver,” I point out, and hand him the keys.
Better to have Dan drive us off the road than direct us to Kansas instead of Kentucky.
“Just don’t drive us off a cliff, okay?”
Danny salutes me with a cheshire cat grin, and I pull open the map after he leaves the parking lot.
“Danny, turn around.”
“Why?”
“He gave us a map for Ohio!”
